Mindset Meltdown

How are you? I mean, really how are you?  Things are very strange at the moment.

My mindset is fluctuating. How about yours?

I’ll start with the good news…

Guest Blog with Women’s Inspire

I am delighted that the wonderful women’s inspire network published my guest blog.

The blog is about the interview process and common mistakes interviewers make with it.

You can read all about that here.

This network of fabulous and supportive women is wonderful and I highly recommend it. Find out more here.

All The Thoughts

I don’t know about you, but my mind has been rather active this week.

It’s been telling me all the things like

.…. No one is recruiting.

….. No one wants to buy your course.

….. Most companies have closed.

….. You should just quit now.

….. You’re useless.

I’ve had negative thoughts for as long as I can remember. Many of them were programmed into me when I was a child (you’re useless).  I usually swot them away but they’ve been persisting this week….

Why? Because we are in a pandemic? Am I tuning into collective anxiety?

Is it because I don’t see anyone real anymore?

On a rational level, I can see there’s evidence to suggest that there’s some truth in these thoughts. A lot of people aren’t at work. Most companies have closed.

It seems a bit daft promoting interview skills at a time like this, doesn’t it?

I’m going to continue though.

Things are going to pick up, and when everything gets back to normal, businesses WILL need to interview people again.

When they take my course they will be able to do it with confidence and ease.

How Can I Help Now?

This is one of the questions I’ve been asking myself.

I want to be of service.

It’s why I turned my blog into an English comprehension class for students around the world who are isolated.  Click here to see it.

I’m an ex ESL teacher and it’s one way I can help right now.

The Watcher

One of the most useful things I’ve learned in the last couple of years is not to take my thoughts too seriously.

I’m learning be the watcher.

I’m learning to observe my thoughts, without judgement (yes this can be challenging).

I’m learning to detach from my thoughts and not believe them.

This is so helpful.

Thought Repetition

How many times have you thought about coronavirus today?

I woke up and thought about it before I even got out of bed!

In January I had zero thoughts about it.

It’s everywhere.  In our feeds, on our screens, in our ears. We talk about it a lot. We repeat it.

That’s why we keep thinking about it (I’m doing it again now arrrgghh).

If we repeatedly input content into our brains, then our brains will continue the repetitions.

Fear mongering makes us feel so much worse. Especially when we’re unaware of how it affects our mindset.

People are ruminating. No wonder there’s collective anxiety.

When we become aware, everyone benefits.

It’s why I’m including a dedicated mindset section in my upcoming Lead and Succeed program.

Helpful Stuff

It’s helpful to spread love, not fear. I intend to spread love and kindness through all my interactions.

I’ve found that limiting news input is REALLY helpful. I’m also taking regular breaks from social media.

I’m filling the gap with possibility and positivity where possible (sometimes it isn’t possible – and that’s ok too).

If you’re scared about covid-19, check out this excellent podcast from psychotherapist Richard Nicholls.

This book ’A New Earth’ by Eckhart Tolle has been transformational for me in terms of thought awareness and detachment. I urge you to read it or listen to it on Audiable.

I am not affiliated with any of my recommendations – they are just what I have found helpful so I’m sharing them in the hope they may help someone else.

Oh, and if you’re up for some fun, why not create an 80’s inspired glamour photo shoot at home this weekend? One of my friends did it this week – hilarious!

I’m tempted to give it a go 😉   #quarantineglamourshoot

Thanks for reading.  Till next time.
